Montgomery opens second camp with second look

East Carolina coach spent time studying turnover woes on video

Scottie Montgomery’s first few games at East Carolina began smoothly. A young head coach’s first encounters with the weight of responsibility — and a job held by fewer than 130 men — exceeded expectations. The Pirates routed Western Carolina, 52-7, and upset North Carolina State, 33-30. Both games had Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium rocking.

But then the Pirates’ rookie head coach learned winning in college football isn’t so easy. The third game was a 20-15 loss at South Carolina that East Carolina could have won, but the moral victory did little to boost the rest of the season. The Pirates claimed only one more victory the rest of the way to finish 3-9. ...
